Owyhee
This increasingly popular blue ribbon trout stream is considered by some fly fishers to be the best brown trout fishery in the west.  Long kept a secret by the locals in the Treasure Valley, the word is spreading quickly about the fabulous browns and rainbows of the Owyhee River.

Just 50 miles west of Boise the Owyhee emerges from the 375 foot high Lake Owyhee Dam with a constant water temperature of 45-50 degrees. The Owyhee's fertile waters boast an enormous insect population of 25,000 bugs per meter.  A vast array of insects are found here; Caddis, Skwala Stones, Chironomids, Baetis, Callibaetis, Pale Morning Duns, March Browns, and Tricos, just to name a few.  Matching the hatch here can be extremely challenging.
The vast smorgasbord of insects provide the food source for the abundant fish population.  Not only are there great numbers of fish, but also great numbers of large fish.  The average size of the brown trout are 17-21 inches with a few monsters at 2 feet plus.  While the browns dominate the food chain on the Owyhee, the rainbow population holds its own.  Though not plentiful, the rainbows here are as fat as footballs and tough to land.  Rainbows in the 18 inch plus range are not uncommon.  These large trout can be as finicky as any spring creek fish.

Due to our own environmental and social concerns, we do not guide on the Owyhee during the spawning period of October and November.  Join us on the Grande Ronde for some fabulous dry fly steelhead fishing!
The Owyhee's short riffles and long pools are ideally suited for stalking fish.  Most afternoons the fish will cruise the pools sipping emergers just under the surface film.  On cloudy days they may even take dry flies on top.

The Oywhee fishes year round, weather permitting, and the river is located in a high desert canyon, so in the coldest months it may ice up.  The best fishing is found during the spring and summer, traditionally June, July and September have been our most productive months.

We do fill up quickly, so we recommend that you book well in advance to assure yourself a day on this awesome river.
